The Humsafar Trust Capacity Building Initiatives
The Humsafar Trust (HST) being one of the first and oldest community based organizations of LGBTQ in the country. It has provided its Technical support towards organizational development of several MSM and TG organizations. The Technical expertise of HST is acknowledged and recognized by National and International agencies. HST has mentored and provided capacity building to Community Based Organizations (CBO) as part of its mandate. At Humsafar, capacity building has a two pronged strategy that include internal and external capacity building. Project SAHYOG supported by MAC AIDS FUND provides on going capacity building to the HIV intervention teams of Humsafar which is specific to the needs of MSM and TG outreach programmes to ensure quality delivery of services to communities in physical sites and internet outreach and continuum of care to MSM and Tg communities living with HIV.
HST nurtured CBOs in Mumbai, Goa, Gujrat and Nagpur informally. It was felt that HST is a replicable model and capacity building of CBOs should be done in a structured manner and GFATM- Round 9 Pehchan Project was its largest initiative. It was a community led first ever initiative that was implemented in the 17 states of country with Humsafar handling 5 States (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa,MP and Rajasthan) in the western region and 51 SSR’s (Sub Sub Recipients) in these 5 states. The objective of this program was to strengthen community institutions and systems for MSM, TG and Hijra communities to increase reach and quality of services. This program mandates the strengthening of the civil societies,institutional capacity building, Policy development and Advocacy of its 51 SSRs are the mandates of the program.
Project DIVA-MSA, a Global Fund Round 9 South Asia HIV programmer for Community system strengthening grant and implementing in 7 countries. As Sub- Recipients (SR) for Project DIVA, The Humsafar Trust has been working in 11 states namely Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttaranchal and Himachal Pradesh./ Project DIVA supports development and strengthening of community-based organizations (CBOs) and systems in multiple countries in South Asia, to address the impact of, and vulnerability to HIV of men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender populations in the region. LINKAGES is aUSAID/PEPFAR/FHI360 project in India that aims to accelerate the ability of Government and KP organizations to collaboratively plan, deliver and optimize services that reduce HIV transmission among KPs and extend life for those who are HIV positive. The Humsafar Trust will provide technical assistance (TA) to 21 TI CBOs working with 18,600 MSM, TG and PWIDs in Mumbai and Pune.
PROJECT CONNECT for India funded by AMPLIFY CHANGE has an overall objective of setting up of a national network secretariat in Delhi and build capacities of the communities for effective delivery of Advocacy initiatives.Project Wajood supported by India HIV AIDS Alliance and is based on learnings from Pehchan and is a ground-breaking rights-based programme that strengthens the capacity of community-based organizations to provide effective, inclusive and sustainable HIV prevention programming for transgender women and Hijras.
