Background:

Founded in April 1994, The Humsafar Trust (HST) is India’s first community-based organization (CBO) of self-identified homosexual men, MSM, Hijras and LBT persons. HST’s Advocacy Unit engages with communities and stakeholders to promote the meaningful inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons. Through outreach with corporates and other workspaces, it has been helping create inclusive environments, support incidents of discrimination, design policy change, and have set up partnerships with over 75 organizations across India. Additionally, HST organizes advocacy workshops for health care providers, law enforcement agencies, judiciary, legislators, politicians and political parties, Government bodies, media, and student community to sensitize them on Gay, MSM, and TGW issues. HST Advocacy Unit implements various initiatives to empower the youth LGBTQ+ that shape the course of the movement.

  • The principal role of the Advocacy Officer will be supporting the Project Manager in managing programmatic, technical and project activities along with organizational Advocacy initiatives.
  • Provide similar support to the program implementing partner CBOs; supporting and managing program development and capacity building; promoting innovation and documentation of good practices of HST’s advocacy project.
  • Lead, support and manage the development and implementation of various program activities (including Capacity building, skilling of transgender persons, community mobilization, resource mobilization, networking with various corporates for workplace inclusion and placements of transgender persons and advocacy with social welfare agencies for social entitlements).
  • They need to contribute to the development and implementation of effective monitoring, review and evaluation strategies and activities for the program against agreed project deliverables.
  • Provide support to fill the MIS of entire project. Handhold support to Project target & responsible for the overall numerical reporting.
  • They need to work along with other team members in preparing and submitting necessary reports to Principal agency. On a timely basis and coordinating with the said authorities for various programs.
  • Collection of report from/within the team & by third party.
  • Promoting innovation and documentation of good practices.
  • Networking with other community-based organizations and groups and facilitate community-led activities aligned with project deliverables.
  • Support in development and implementation of effective monitoring, review and evaluation strategies and activities for the program against agreed project deliverables.
  • Identifying emerging needs and challenges of the community and planning activities aligned with project deliverables.
  • Assist the Advocacy Manager in designing, planning, and implementing advocacy plans, programs and implementation of capacity building initiatives.
  • Maintain minutes of meeting & filling of letters at respective authorities.
  • Any other job or related task as determined by the Reporting Head.

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • A clear commitment towards advocating for rights and inclusion of LGBTQ+ communities.
  • Proficiency in English and Hindi, Marathi or any other regional language
  • Graduate degree in Social Sciences or commerce related discipline with a minimum of 1-2 years of experience in program, advocacy management
  • Experience of working on gender or queer rights will be preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and prioritize workload.

It’s a full-time position. Fixed short-term contract for 9 months and will be renewed based on funding availability and project requirement.
