Background: Founded in April 1994, The Humsafar Trust (HST) is India’s first community-based organization (CBO) of self-identified homosexual men, MSM, Hijras, and LBT persons. The HIV interventions of HST are supported by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) and Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS) to provide health services to Men who have sex with men (MSM) and Transgender communities every year through Public Health Care delivery systems and its In-house clinics. HST organizes advocacy workshops for health care providers, law enforcement agencies, judiciary, legislators, politicians and political parties, Government bodies, media, and student community to sensitise them on Gay, MSM, and TG issues. HST also provides legal support, crisis management, mental health and nutrition counselling to its communities.

The Humsafar Trust’s advocacy unit works on multiple levels simultaneously. While also engaging with the LGBTQ community, the unit works closely with key stakeholders in the rights agenda for instance lawyers, doctors, educators, police, corporate companies, politicians, parents and families. Sensitization and mainstreaming of LGBTQ issues is the main aim of the unit

Overview: TRANScend is an initiative by The Humsafar Trust which aims to enhance socio- economic inclusion of transgender persons in India. TRANScend, as an initiative, is committed to encouraging greater community ownership, facilitating partnerships between the community and various stakeholders like corporates, educational institutes, judiciary, bureaucrats and providing a platform for addressing the ever- evolving needs of the transgender community through ongoing research and intervention. This project focuses on enhancing economic resilience of transgender persons in India.

Under the supervision of the Project Manager – Advocacy, the Advocacy Coordinator is responsible to develop key advocacy strategies and manage the activities as per action plan of the project. The advocacy coordinator will also be responsible to manage the crisis situations which are reported to HST Delhi office and support the community members in filing FIR and accompany them to the police station.

Job responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and communicate with corporate partners to plan, follow up and implement the LGBTQ+ inclusion initiatives.
  • Creating and maintaining database of job seekers from the community and identify the suitable job openings.
  • Facilitate the recruitment process and upskilling support along with project teams.
  • Co-ordinate advocacy activities with the advocacy panel and conducting meetings.
  • Prepare reports of advocacy programs, workshops, and events
  • Assist the Advocacy team in designing, planning, and implementing advocacy plans and programs.
  • Organizing seminars, workshops and need base events.
  • Coordinate with speakers, press, and invitees.
  • Actively participate and represent the organization in various networks and movements.
  • Address the crisis situations and support HST crisis team to maintain the documentation and records.
  • Any other related task as directed by the Project Manager or Associate Director Advocacy.

Qualifications:

  • Commitment to community work
  • Knowledge of a minimum of two languages is preferred,
  • Computer skills especially using word, excel, power point.
  • Strong interpersonal skills coupled with excellent communication skills: verbal, written, listening, presentation and facilitation.
  • Experienced in crisis handling will be an advantage.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in advocacy especially in HIV/AIDS

Contract:

Fixed short-term contract for 12 months and will be renewed based on funding availability and project requirement.

Compensation Offered:

We are an equal pay employer. Compensation offered is at par with market rate. The following factors will be considered while finalizing salary:
