Mental Health Counsellor

The Humsafar Trust (HST) is India’s first community-based organization (CBO) of self-identified homosexual men, MSM, Hijras and LBT persons. The HIV interventions of HST are supported by National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) and Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS) to provide health services to Men who have sex with men (MSM) and Transgender communities every year through Public Health Care delivery systems and its in-house clinics. HST organises advocacy workshops for health care providers, law enforcement agencies, judiciary, legislators, politicians and political parties, Government bodies, media, student communities; to sensitise them on Gay, MSM and TG issues. HST also provides legal support, crisis management, mental health, and nutrition counselling to its communities.

We are looking for an experienced Mental Health Counsellor with a minimum of 3 years of experience.


A. Key Responsibilities 

  1. Provide mental health counselling to the communities and staff of The Humsafar Trust
  2. Providing Psychosocial counselling
  3. Knowledge of therapeutic process skills and psychotherapy 
  4. Provide Pre-test and Post-test HIV counselling
  5. Provide technical support and training to TI counselling unit
  6. Conduct monthly meetings with to strengthen the counselling component.
  7. Provide technical support and training to PLHA support group
  8. Connectfor monthly meetings with Director Health
  9. Provide telephonic counselling for calls received at HST helpline
  10. Provide Crisis Counselling as required 


B. Minimum Qualifications and Skills required


Qualifications- (any of the following)

  1. Masters in Psychology
  2. M.Sc. Counselling & Psychology/ or Psychotherapy

You can additionally provide any valid certification that may be applicable for this position.



  1. HIV / LGBTQ experience a plus
  2. Display a clear commitment to community work.
  3. Knowledge of more than one language is preferred, English, Hindi, Marathi (ideal)
  4. Ability to be empathetic 
  5. A minimum of three years of experience of working in relevant field is necessary
  6. Ability to work independently and take initiative
  7. Ability to exercise good judgment and problem-solving skills
  8. Strong communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  9. Ability to maintain confidentiality

C. Time Involvement


100% time (8 hours x 5 days every week) to the organization. The Mental Health Counsellor reports to the Director Health.
