Background
Founded in April 1994, The Humsafar Trust (HST) is India’s first community-based organization (CBO) of self-identified homosexual men, MSM, Hijras, and LBT persons. HST’s Advocacy & Inclusion vertical engages with communities and stakeholders to promote the meaningful inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons. Through outreach with corporates and other workspaces, it has been helping create inclusive environments, supporting incidents of discrimination, designing policy change, and setting up partnerships with over 75 organizations across India. Additionally, HST organizes awareness and sensitization workshops for healthcare providers, law enforcement agencies, judiciary, legislators, politicians and political parties, government bodies, media, and student communities to sensitize them on LGBTQ+ issues. HST’s Advocacy & Inclusion vertical implements various initiatives to empower LGBTQ+ youth that shape the course of the movement.
Job Responsibilities
Working in accordance with the job responsibilities as defined in The Humsafar Trust Human Resources Policy and with support and supervision provided by the Advocacy Manager.
Key Responsibilities
· The principal role of the Advocacy Officer will be supporting the Advocacy Manager in managing programmatic, technical, and project activities along with organizational advocacy initiatives.
· Provide similar support to program-implementing partner CBOs, supporting and managing program development and capacity building, promoting innovation, and documenting good practices of HST’s advocacy projects.
· Lead, support, and manage the development and implementation of various program activities, including capacity building, skilling of transgender persons, community mobilization, resource mobilization, networking with various corporates for workplace inclusion and placements of transgender persons, and advocacy with social welfare agencies for social entitlements.
· Contribute to the development and implementation of effective monitoring, review, and evaluation strategies and activities for the program against agreed project deliverables.
· Provide support to maintain and update the MIS of the entire project, ensuring handholding support to project targets and being responsible for overall numerical reporting.
· Work alongside other team members in preparing and submitting necessary reports to the Principal agency on a timely basis, as well as coordinating with the said authorities for various programs.
· Collect and compile reports from the team and third-party sources.
· Promote innovation and documentation of good practices.
· Network with other community-based organizations and groups to facilitate community-led activities aligned with project deliverables.
· Support the development and implementation of effective monitoring, review, and evaluation strategies for the program.
· Identify emerging needs and challenges of the community and plan activities aligned with project deliverables.
· Assist the Advocacy Manager in designing, planning, and implementing advocacy plans, programs, and capacity-building initiatives.
· Maintain minutes of meetings and ensure proper documentation of communications with respective authorities.
· Any other job or related task as determined by the Reporting Head.
Qualifications & Competencies:
· A clear commitment toward advocating for the inclusion of LGBTQ+ communities.
· Must be street smart, detail-oriented, and solution-driven.
· Should be independent and proactive; the role does not involve excessive hand-holding.
· Passion for LGBTQ+ inclusion and engagement.
· Well-informed and up-to-date on developments impacting LGBTQ+ communities.
· Strong financial sense, with the ability to manage budgets and assess resource allocation.
· Proficiency in English and Hindi; Marathi or any other regional language is preferred.
· Experience working on gender or queer inclusion will be preferred.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to analyze and prioritize workload effectively.
· Preferred skills and experience in at least one of the following areas:
o Social media handling for advocacy and outreach.
o Talent acquisition and placement support for LGBTQ+ individuals.
o Experience working on scholarship and livelihood programs for LGBTQ+ youth.
Compensation:
